\textit{S. Fomin} and \textit{A. Zelevinsky} introduced the concept of cluster algebras in order to create an algebraic framework for studying total positivity in algebraic groups and canonical bases [J. Am. Math. Soc. 15, No. 2, 497--529 (2002; Zbl 1021.16017)]. Cluster algebras from surfaces, which are an important class of cluster algebras, are introduced by \textit{S. Fomin} et al. [Acta Math. 201, No. 1, 83--146 (2008; Zbl 1263.13023)]. They proved that there is a bijection between the tagged arcs in a triangulation and cluster varialbes. Many mathematicians want to find the cluster expansion formulas to describe cluster variables from the arcs. \textit{G. Musiker} et al. [Adv. Math. 227, No. 6, 2241--2308 (2011; Zbl 1331.13017)] gave cluster expansion formulas for cluster variables from a triangulated surface with or without punctures, from which the positivity conjecture for these cluster algebras is proved. In the paper under review, based on the work of Musiker, Schiffler and Williams, the author gives new ``unified'' expansion formulas for cluster algebras from surfaces by introducing two certain lattices. This expansion formula would be useful for further research on (quantum) cluster algebras.
