Several geometric properties of a Banach space related to local uniform rotundity are considered. The main focus is, however, on the property the author calls HLUR which is a weakening of local uniform rotundity. Recall that a Banach space \(X\) is locally uniformly rotund (LUR) if \(\|x - x_n\| \to 0\) whenever \(x \in S_X\) and \((x_n) \subset S_X\) with \(\|x + x_n\| \to 2.\) A Banach space is said to be HLUR if for every \(x \in S_X\) and every \((x_n) \subset S_X\) with \(\|x + x_n\| \to 2,\) we have \(d(x_n, S(x^*, 0)) \to 0\) for every \(x^* \in S_{X^*}\) with \(x^*(x) = 1.\) Here \(S(x^*, 0)\) denotes the set \(\{y \in B_X: x^*(y) = 1\}.\) The author establishes (in Theorem~4.3) characterizations of the property HLUR in terms of other known geometric Banach space properties. He then obtains several consequences of this, among them a result (Corollary~4.4) characterizing LUR spaces. In Corollary~4.8 the author also proves that for finite dimensional spaces \(X\), the property HLUR is equivalent to the anti-Daugavet property. A Banach space \(X\) has the anti-Daugavet property if for every bounded linear operator \(T: X \to X\) satisfying the equation \(\|I + T\| = 1 + \|T\|\), where \(I\) is the identity operator on \(X\), \(\|T\|\) belongs to the spectrum of \(T.\)
