This is an interesting paper in which the authors investigate the rank of the \(2\)-class group of the fields \(L_d=\mathbb{Q}(i,\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{d})\) where \(d\) is an odd square-free integer. This is achieved by using some invariants of algebraic number theory involving genus theory, ambiguous class number, quadratic norm residue symbol, and by exploiting formulas for calculating the rank of the \(2\)-class group. The number of prime ideals of \(\mathbb{Q}(i, \sqrt{2}))\) which ramify in \(L_d\) comes into play. The investigation is made via the congruences modulo 8 satisfied by the prime divisors of \(d\). The authors describe the integers \(d\) for which the \(2\)-class group of \(\mathbb{Q}(i, \sqrt{2}, \sqrt{d})\) is either trivial, cyclic, or of rank \(2\). They describe the integers \(d\) for which the \(2\)-class group is isomorphic to two copies of \(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\). They also write the \(2\)-part of the class number of \(L_d\) in terms of the \(2\)-parts of the class numbers of its biquadratic subfields.
