The authors investigate some approximation characteristics of the Nikol'sky-Besov type classes of periodic functions of one and more variables (the notations $B_{(p,\theta)}^\omega$ and $B_{(p,\theta)}^\Omega$, respectively) in the space $B_{1,1}$, where the norm is stronger than the $L_1$ norm. The authors obtained exact order estimates of the orthowidths of the mentioned classes of functions as well as the orders of approximations of these classes by their stepwise hyperbolic Fourier sums in the space $B_{1,1}$. At the same time, the authors note that the research revealed the specific features of the multidimensional case in comparison with the one-dimensional one. They are as follows: it is established that in the multidimensional case $(d\geq 2)$ the orders of the considered characteristics in the spaces $B_{1,1}$ and $L_1$ are different. In addition, they depend on the parameter θ, which is not observed in the one-dimensional case.
