It is still not known whether a solution to the 3D incompressible Euler equations with smooth initial data will blow up in finite time. In [the second and third author, Commun. Math. Phys. 378, No. 1, 557--568 (2020; Zbl 1446.35114)] it is shown that a finite-time blow-up solution becomes linearly unstable close to the blow-up time if it exists. In this paper, motivated by the numerical investigations of finite time blow-up solutions, the authors continue their study and prove that the same unstable phenomenon holds even in the more rigid axisymmetric case by employing the ideas from [loc. cit.]. The main ingredients in the proof of this paper are the WKB expansion and a blow-up criterion involving only the toroidal component of the vorticity that is established by exploiting the axisymmetric feature of the solutions. Furthermore, the instability of blow-up profiles is also investigated.
