This work proposes a model to study some differential equations with delay via contraction semigroups. A strongly continuous semigroup is a contraction semigroup if and only if the infinitesimal generator of the semigroup is dissipative. So, it is important to establish conditions which ensure that an operator is dissipative. The main idea of this paper is to construct a specific inner product such that the considered operator is dissipative with respect to this inner product. The last part of the paper contains some applications such as stability of delay differential equations and stochastic evolution equations.
