    This article generalizes results of \textit{L. Ji} and \textit{A. Weber} [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 30, No. 2, 457--468 (2010; Zbl 1185.37077)]. Let \(X\) be a Riemannian symmetric space of noncompact type (i.e., \(X\) has nonpositive sectional curvature and no Euclidean de Rham factor). Let \(I_{0}(X)\) denote the identity component of the isometry group of \(X\). Let \(\Delta\) denote the Laplace operator acting on the functions of \(X\). A result of M. Taylor states that the spectrum of \(- \Delta\) on \(L^{2}(X)\) equals \([|\rho|^{2}, \infty)\), where \(\rho\) is a vector defined by data in the Lie algebra of \(I_{0}(X)\). For \(p > 0\) with \(p \neq 1\) define \(p' = \frac{p}{p-1}\) and \(c_{p} = \frac{4|\rho|^{2}}{pp'}\). For fixed \(c \in \mathbb{R}\) define a semigroup \(T_{t} = e^{-t (\Delta -c)}, t \geq 0\). Let \(W\) be an invariant subspace of \(L^{p}(X)\) or \(L^{\infty}(X)\). The semigroup \(\{T_{t} \}\) is said to be \(\mathit{hypercyclic}\) on \(W\) if \(\{T_{t} \}\) has a dense orbit in \(W\). \(\{T_{t} \}\) is \(\mathit{chaotic}\) on \(W\) if \(\{T_{t} \}\) is hypercyclic on \(W\) and the periodic vectors of \(\{T_{t} \}\) in \(W\) are dense in \(W\). \(\{T_{t} \}\) is said to be \(\mathit{subspace~ chaotic}\) on \(L^{p}(X)\) or \(L^{\infty}(X)\) if \(\{T_{t} \}\) is chaotic on some invariant subspace \(W\). The main results are the following: {\parindent= 2.00 cm \begin{itemize} \item[Theorem] (a) For \(2 < p < \infty\), \(\{T_{t} \}\) is chaotic on \(L^{p}(X) \Leftrightarrow c > c_{p}\) (b) \(\{T_{t} \}\) is non-chaotic on \(L^{\infty}(X)\) for all \(c \in \mathbb{R}\) (c) \(\{T_{t} \}\) is subspace chaotic on \(L^{\infty}(X) \Leftrightarrow c > 0\). \item [Theorem] Let \(1 \leq p \leq 2\) and \(c \in \mathbb{R}\). (a) \(\{T_{t} \}\) has no periodic point in \(L^{p}(X)\) (b) \(\{T_{t} \}\) is not hypercyclic on \(L^{p}(X)\). \item [Theorem] Let \(1 \leq p \leq \infty\). (a) \(\{T_{t} \}\) is not hypercyclic on \(L^{p}(X)\) if \(c \leq c_{p}\) (b) \(\{T_{t} \}\) has no periodic point in \(L^{p}(X)\) if \(c < c_{p}\). \end{itemize}}
