For a Riemannian symmetric space \(X=G/K\) of non--compact type, there is the Oshima compactification \(\tilde X\). This is a simply connected, closed, real--analytic manifold endowed with an analytic action of the group \(G\), with open orbits isomorphic to \(X\). The regular representation of \(G\) on the Banach space \(C(\tilde X)\) can be used to define an action of a rapidly decreasing smooth function \(f\) on \(C(\tilde X)\) and the analysis of the resulting operators \(\pi(f)\) is the main topic of the article. The closure of the open orbits in \(\tilde X\) is a manifold with corners. Using that the orbit decomposition of \(\tilde X\) is of normal crossing type, the authors first prove that the restriction of \(\pi(f)\) to compactly support smooth functions on this closure is a totally characteristic pseudodifferential operator of class \(L^{-\infty}_b\). This result is then used to study the holomorphic semigroup generated by a strongly elliptic operator associated to the regular representation. Moreover, the authors define a regularized trace for the operators \(\pi(f)\), which can be interpreted as a distributional character of the regular representation. Finally, this character is shown to be given by a locally integrable function on a certain open subset of transversal elements, and an analog of the Atiyah--Bott character formula is proved.
