The authors study the system of eigenfunctions for the Dirac type \(2\times 2\) system \[ - i B^{-1} y' +Q(x) y =\lambda y, \qquad x\in [0,1] \] with linearly independent boundary conditions. Here, \(B=\text{diag}(b_1, b_2)\), \(b_1 b_2 <0\), and the complex-valued potential matrix is \[ Q(x) = \left( \begin{matrix} 0 & Q_{12}(x) \\ Q_{21}(x) & 0 \end{matrix} \right). \] The main result is that when \(Q(x)\) is Lebesgue integrable, the system of eigenfunctions of the problem possesses the so-called Riesz basis property in the Hilbert space \(L^2([0,1],{\mathbb C})\). Due to the well-known Bari's criterion, the Riesz basis property means that the system is complete, minimal and Bessel in \(L^2([0,1],{\mathbb C})\). The Riesz basis property for such systems has been well-established when \(Q(x)\) is square integrable. The present extension to Lebesgue integrable potential matrices is obtained by approximation of smooth (and therefore square integrable) potential matrices.
