Let \(UT_m(F)\) be the algebra of upper triangular matrices of order \(m\) over a field \(F\) of characteristic 0. By a result of Latyshev from the 1970's the algebras \(UT_m(F)\) may serve as a measure of the complexity of the polynomial identities of finitely generated algebras with non-matrix identity in the same way as matrix algebras measure the complexity of algebras with arbitrary polynomial identities. It is known that all gradings of \(UT_m(F)\) by a finite abelian group are elementary. In the paper under review the authors consider the graded polynomial identities of \(UT_m(F)\) and their numerical invariants for \(\mathbb Z_m\)-gradings. More precisely they study the so called \(Y\)-proper identities which are characterized by the property that the variables of the 0-component participate in commutators only. The main attention is paid to the grading induced by the \(m\)-tuple \(\psi=(0,0,1,\ldots,m-2)\). The authors compute the \(Y\)-proper graded cocharacter sequence and give the explicit formulas for the multiplicities in the case \(m=2,3,4,5\).
