A mixed boundary value problem of Zaremba type, i.e., the problem in which a solution to a second-order elliptic equation \(Au=f\) (\(x\in G\subset \mathbb R^n\)) must satisfy the Dirichlet boundary condition on one part \(Y_{-}\) of the boundary \(\Gamma=\partial G\) and the boundary condition of the Neumann type on another part \(Y_+\) of the boundary, is examined. Here, \(G\) is a bounded domain with smooth boundary \(\overline{Y_{-}}\cup \overline{Y_{+}}=\Gamma\) and \(Y_{-}\cap Y_{+}=\emptyset\). Most attention is payed to the case of \(A=\Delta\). First, the authors define function spaces (Sobolev spaces \(W_2^s\) in domains and on manifolds) and some operators (the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, the operator of the mixed boundary value problem \(u\to (Au,u|_{Y_{-}},\partial_{\nu}u|_{Y_{+}})\)) and study their properties from the standpoint of pseudo-differential calculus. The problem reduces to a relevant operator equation involving the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. The interface between \(Y_-\) and \(Y_+\) (\(\overline{Y_{-}}\cap \overline{Y_{+}}=Z\)) is called the edge. New Mellin edge quantisations of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on the Neumann side of the boundary are employed and allow the authors to construct parametrices for the original mixed problem. This is the main result of the article. Necessary tools on boundary value problems and edge calculus are exposed in the last section.
