When considering an automorphism \(\sigma\) of finite order on a \(K3\) surface \(X\), it has been proven by the author in another paper [Math. Res. Lett. 21, No. 3, 509--520 (2014; Zbl 1304.14046)] that the order of \(\sigma\) is less or equal to 66, provided that the characteristic \(p\) of the base field \(k\) is not 2 or 3. In this paper the author studies \(K3\) surfaces with automorphisms attaining this bound and characterizes them according to \(p\). When \(k=\mathbb C\) or \(p\neq 2,3,11\), the author proves that a \(K3\) surface admitting an automorphism \(\sigma\) of order 66 is unique up to isomorphism. The same result was proven for \(k=\mathbb C\) in [\textit{S. Kondō}, J. Math. Soc. Japan 44, No. 1, 75--98 (1992; Zbl 0763.14021)] and [\textit{N. Machida, K. Oguiso}, J. Math. Sci., Tokyo 5, No. 2, 273--297 (1998; Zbl 0949.14022)], with additional hypothesis. With a different proof, the same result is also proven for \(p=11\). Observe that the automorphism \(\sigma\) is said to be \textit{tame} if its order is prime to the characteristic and \textit{wild} otherwise. The paper provides the explicit equation of the unique (up to isomorphism) \(K3\) surface with base filed of characteristic \(p\neq 2,3\) admitting a cyclic action of order 66, distinguishing the wild and the tame case, i.e. \(p=11\) or \(p\nmid 66\).
