The convergence of the \(J\)-flow, introduced by Donaldson and Chen, can be used to study the properness of the \(K\)-energy. In this paper, using the \(J\)-flow method and \textit{J. Song} and \textit{B. Weinkove}'s result [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 61, No. 2, 210--229 (2008; Zbl 1135.53047)], the authors give a sufficient condition for the properness of the \(K\)-energy in a general Kähler class on a compact Kähler manifold. Applications to projective toric varieties are given and examples of Kähler classes on \(\mathbb{C}P^2\sharp3{\overline{\mathbb{C}P^2}}\) in which the \(K\)-energy is proper are described. Moreover, the result of Song-Weinkove about the existence of critical points of the functional which gradient flow is the \(J\)-flow is proved by the continuity method.
