The author provides a sufficient condition on the initial data for the convergence of the \(J\)-flow in the space of Kähler potentials to a critical metric. This generalizes the author's previous work on Kähler surfaces to higher dimensions [Commun. Anal. Geom. 12, No. 4, 949--965 (2004; Zbl 1073.53092)]. As a corollary, he also obtains the lower boundedness of the Mabuchi energy on Kähler classes satisfying a certain inequality when the first Chern class of the manifold is negative. More precisely: Let \((M,\omega )\) be a compact Kähler manifold of complex dimension \(n\), let \(\chi_0\) be another Kähler form on \(M\), and let \(\mathcal{H}\) denote the space of Kähler potentials, given by \[ \mathcal{H} = \biggl\{ \phi \in C^{\infty}(M) \Big| \chi_{\phi}=\chi_0+\frac{\sqrt{-1}}{2} \partial \overline{\partial} \phi >0 \bigg\} . \] The \(J\)-flow, introduced by \textit{S. K. Donaldson} [Asian J. Math. 3, No. 1, 1--15 (1999; Zbl 0999.53053)], is the flow in \(\mathcal{H}\) given by \[ \frac{\partial \phi_t}{\partial t}= c-\frac{\omega \wedge \chi_{\phi_t}^{n-1}}{\chi_{\phi_t}^n} \quad\text{and}\quad \phi_0=0, \] where \(c\) is the constant given by \(c=\frac{\int_M \, \omega \wedge \chi_0^{n-1}}{\int_M \, \chi_0^n}\). With this notation, the main theorem of the paper reads as follows: If the Kähler metrics \(\omega\) and \(\chi_0\) satisfy \(nc\chi_0-(n-1)\omega >0\), then the \(J\)-flow converges in \(C^\infty\) to a smooth critical metric.
