The authors begin the exploration of orthogonal polynomials on the real line where the underlying measure is of the simplest purely singular continuous type: the classical Cantor \(1/3\)-measure. This measure is the \(\delta=1/3\) case of a family parametrized by \[ \varphi_{\pm}(x)=\pm (1+\delta x),\;0<\delta\leq {1\over 2}, \] generating a unique probability measure \(\mu_{\delta}\) satisfying \[ \int f(x)dx={1\over 2}\,\int f(\varphi_{+}(x))d\mu+{1\over 2}\,\int f(\varphi_{-}(x))d\mu. \] \vskip0.3cm After a short introduction, Section 2 studies regularity and zero spacing (for the concept of regular measures and logarithmic capacity the reader is referred to the book by \textit{H. Stahl} and \textit{V. Totik} [General orthogonal polynomials. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (1992; Zbl 0791.33009)]). Interesting results are covered in the Theorems 2.1--2.4. \vskip0.3cm Section 3 (Cantor polynomials: numeric results) gives numerical results encompassing 100,000 Jacobi parameters \(a_n\) for \(\delta=1/3\) and several other values of \(\delta\). This section also poses two conjecures on the behavior of these parameters. \vskip0.3cm In Section 4 the subject of finite gap sets is looked into in connection with `Isospectral tori' and in Section 5 this is followed by `Gap labeling' (Theorem 5.2) and `Borg's theorem' (Theorem 5.3). \vskip0.3cm The Sections 6 (Perturbation of the isospectral torus) and 7 (Dimension of the spectrum) give more results on the case of general \(\delta\). \vskip0.3cm The paper concludes with an appendix indicating how the numerical data were obtained and with a list of references containing 32 items.
