Let \(R\) be a ring, and for \(x,y\in R\) denote by \([x,y]\) the commutator \(xy-yx\). A map \(F\colon R\to R\), not necessarily additive, is called a multiplicative (generalized)-derivation if there exists a map \(g\colon R\to R\), called the associated map, such that \(F(xy)=F(x)y+xg(y)\) for all \(x,y\in R\). Note that if \(F\) is additive and \(g\) is a derivation, then \(F\) is what is known as a generalized derivation. In this paper the authors study various constraints satisfied by \(F\) on ideals or square closed Lie ideals of semiprime or prime rings. Among the results are the following: (a) Let \(R\) be semiprime and \(I\) a nonzero ideal of \(R\). If \(F\) and \(G\) are multiplicative (generalized)-derivations with associated maps \(d\) and \(g\) and \([F(x),y]-[x,G(y)]=0\) for all \(x,y\in I\), then \([d(x),x]=[g(x),x]=0\) for all \(x\in I\); (b) Let \(R\) be prime with \(\text{char}(R)\neq 2\), and \(U\) a nonzero square closed Lie ideal of \(R\). If \(F\) is a multiplicative (generalized)-derivation on \(R\) with associated map \(g\) and \(F(uv)-uv=0\) for all \(u,v\in U\), then \(g(U)=\{0\}\) and \(F(u)=u\) for all \(u\in U\).
