For an integral domain \(D\) with quotient field \(K\) and non-empty \(E\subset K\) let \(\mathrm{Int}(E,D)\) be the ring of polynomials \(f\in K[X]\) mapping \(E\) into \(D\). It is known that in the case of \(E\) finite the ring \(\mathrm{Int}(E,D)\) is a Prüfer domain if and only if \(D\) is a Prüfer domain [\textit{D. L. McQuillan}, Proc. R. Ir. Acad., Sect. A 85, 177--184 (1985; Zbl 0596.13017)]. In the local case it has been shown by Cahen, Chabert and Loper [\textit{P.-J. Cahen} et al., J. Korean Math. Soc. 38, No. 5, 915--935 (2001; Zbl 1010.13011)] that if \(D\) is a valuation domain and \(E\subset D\) is precompact, then \(\mathrm{Int}(E,D)\) is a Prüfer domain. The author establishes the converse (Theorem 2.7) under the additional assumption that \(E\) is an additive subgroup of \(D\), and then studies the global case, and in the next two theorems gives a sufficient condition as well as a necessary condition for \(\mathrm{Int}(E,D)\) to be Prüfer.
