The author considers the 3D water waves problem i.e. the motion of the free interface separating an (upper) zero-density region from a (lower) region containing an inviscid incompressible irrotational fluid submitted to gravity. The Cauchy problem for this free boundary value problem is equivalent to a 2D system describing the evolution of the interface. In this article, the author studies a class of solutions of this last system which are perturbations of a wave packet propagating in the \(x\) direction, with an amplitude satisfying a 2D cubic non linear Schrödinger equation for large times and the goal is to provide a rigorous justification of this approximation.
