We formulate the theory of rectilinear flow, under constant body forces, of a frictional and cohesive material which satisfies the Coulomb-Mohr yield criterion. For flow parallel to a traction-free plane surface, the stress in deforming regions is governed by a single quasi-linear partial differential equation, whose characteristics are normal cross sections of the slip-surfaces, the surfaces on which the velocity is constant. The characteristic equations are solved to give explicit expressions for the characteristics.
