This paper provides a unified approach for the investigation of the qualitative properties of solutions to Cauchy problems for several linear thermoelasticity models: the classical (or type-1 based on Fourier's law of heat conduction), type-2 built on Jeffrey's type of heat-flux equation, more dissipative type-3, and thermoelastic systems with second sound based on Cattaneo's heat-flux equation (with possible lower order terms) for isotropic media. The approach is based on a diagonalisation procedure for cases of small and large frequencies and on the treatment of bounded frequencies. The obtained solution representations are used to derive results on well-posedness, \(L^p\)-\(L^q\) decay estimates, diffusion phenomena and on the propagation of singularities. The paper mostly focuses on the problems in one space dimension; however, possible extensions to treat higher dimensional cases, especially to 3D case, are discussed.
