A homogeneous Riemannian structure in a simply connected complete Riemannian manifold \((M,g)\) is a \((1,2)\) tensor field \(S\) on it such that the connection \(\tilde\nabla=\nabla-S\), where \(\nabla\) stands for the Levi-Civita connection, satisfies the equations \(\tilde\nabla g=0\), \(\tilde\nabla S=0\), and \(\tilde\nabla R=0\), where \(R\) is the curvature tensor of \(\nabla\). In 1958, Ambrose and Singer proved that \(M\) is homogeneous if and only if it admits such a tensor \(S\). In the book [Homogeneous structures on Riemannian manifolds. London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series, 83. Cambridge etc.: Cambridge University Press. (1983; Zbl 0509.53043)], \textit{F. Tricerri} and \textit{L. Vanhecke} defined an \(O(n)\)-invariant decomposition \({\mathcal T}={\mathcal T}_1\oplus{\mathcal T}_2\oplus{\mathcal T}_3\), where \(\mathcal T\) is the space of homogeneous structures. They proved that tensors in \({\mathcal T}_1\) define homogeneous structures isometric to the real hyperbolic spaces (may be, non-symmetric). They are called structures of linear type. Similar results hold for the complex [\textit{P. M. Gadea, A. Montesinos Amilibia} and \textit{J. Masqué Muñoz}, Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 128, No. 1, 87--94 (2000; Zbl 0982.53066)] and quaternionic [the authors, Transform. Groups 11, No. 4, 575--608 (2006; Zbl 1123.53025)] hyperbolic spaces. Since a symmetric space of noncompact type has the form \(M=G/K\), there \(G\) is semisimple and \(K\) is its maximal compact subgroup, a subgroup \(T\subseteq G\) acts on \(M\) transitively if it is cocompact. Using Witte's theorem on cocompact subgroups of semisimple groups, the authors characterize connected transitive Lie subgroups of the full isometry group \(G\) for the real and complex hyperbolic spaces in terms of a decomposition \(FN\), where \(N\) is the nilpotent component of the Iwasawa decomposition. They also give examples of homogeneous structures of non-linear type.
