The Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity (of a parameter ideal \(I\)) is an important numerical invariant of a local ring \(R\) of dimension \(d\). This invariant may regard as the \(0\)-th Hilbert coefficient attached to the Hilbert function. In particular, there are some higher Hilbert coefficients with respect to \(I\). We denote them by \(\{e_i(I,R):0\leq i\leq d\}\). These are equipped with certain interesting properties. For instance, see [\textit{L. Ghezzi} et al., J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 81, No. 3, 679--695 (2010; Zbl 1200.13037)]. The paper under review presents 3 main theorems: 1) the negativity property \(e_+(I,R)\leq 0\); 2) \(e_i(I,R)=0 \Longleftrightarrow\mathrm{depth}(\mathrm{gr}_I(R))\geq d-i+1\); and 3) \(e_{d-k+2}(I,R)=e_{d-k+3}(I,R)=\ldots =e_{d}(I,R)= 0\) and \(\mathrm{depth}(\mathrm{gr}_I(R))\geq k\). Here, is about of some of the assumptions. The result 1) works under some depth-conditions \(\mathrm{depth}(\mathrm{gr}_I(R))\geq d-2\) and \(\mathrm{depth}(R)\geq d-1\). This extends the work [\textit{L. McCune}, J. Commut. Algebra 5, 399--412 (2013; Zbl 1302.13017))]. 2) is restricted over ideals generated by a \(d\)-sequence. The result 3) works under a depth-condition of \(R\) and a bound on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the associated graded ring \(\mathrm{gr}_I(R)\).
