The paper under review concerns affine differential geometry and deals with equiaffine isoparametric hypersurfaces in a unimodular affine space \(A^{n+1}\). This particular family of hypersurfaces was introduced as an affine counterpart of the classical concept of isoparametric hypersurfaces by applying specific properties of the affine shape operator and its characteristic polynomial, see [\textit{M. Ooguri}, Result. Math. 46, No. 1--2, 79--90 (2004; Zbl 1082.53013); \textit{R. Niebergall} and \textit{P. J. Ryan}, Math. Z. 217, No. 3, 479--485 (1994; Zbl 0826.53007)]. Motivated by classical results on isoparametric hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds, the authors propose an alternative method for defining equiaffine isoparametric hypersurfaces as hypersurfaces which can be incorporated into families of equiaffine parallel hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature in \(A^{n+1}\). Consequently, a novel notion of equiaffine isoparametric functions is introduced and the following statement is proved as the main result of the paper. Theorem. A non-degenerate hypersurface \(x:M^n\to A^{n+1}\) in the affine space \(A^{n+1}\) is locally strongly convex equiaffine isoparametric if and only if it is a regular level set of an equiaffine isoparametric function defined on an open neighbourhood of \(x(M^n)\) in \(A^{n+1}\).
