This book contains correspondence to and from L. E. J. Brouwer, known both for his fixed-point theorem (originally in topology, but since used in many other fields) and as the founder and first champion of the mathematical philosophy known as intuitionism. The letters selected include his early work influenced by his friend Carel Adama van Scheltema and his teacher Diederik Korteweg, his important work on topology before the First World War, his development of intuitionism and his work on dimension theory, the loss of his position on the editorial board of the journal Mathematische Annalen, and questions by the authorities about his conduct during the occupation of the Netherlands in World War Two. The notes are sparing but helpful in understanding the context in which the letters were written and the people involved.
