Let \(M^{2n}\) be an oriented smooth manifold on which a compact torus is acting. Assume the stabilizer subgroups of the action are connected and the fixed point set is isolated. A wide class of such manifolds is given by toric and quasitoric manifolds that play an important role in algebraic geometry, algebraic topology and mathematical physics. For each action the author introduces certain functional equations called \(M^{2n}\)-rigidity equations. These equations are based on the localization theorem for equivariant Hirzebruch genera. In particular, the author studies the \(M^{2n}\)-rigidity equations for homogeneous spaces of compact Lie groups and toric varieties that correspond to two-dimensional nestohedra and reflexive polygons. Many of the \(M^{2n}\)-rigidity equations considered in this paper are connected with problems in mathematical physics and induce interesting dynamical systems. For example, the \({\mathbb{C}}P^2\)-rigidity equation plays an important role in a problem on quantum Dunkl operators.
