In [Isr. J. Math. 223, No. 1, 493--504 (2018; Zbl 1397.46010)], the late \textit{C. Read} gave a renorming of \(c_0\) for which there is no proximinal subspace of finite codimension more than one. This answered to the extreme, in the negative, a question of I. Singer from the early 1970s. Note that \textit{M. Rmoutil} [J. Funct. Anal. 272, No. 3, 918--928 (2018; Zbl 1359.46008)] showed that this renorming of \(c_0\) also provides an example of a space where the set of norm-attaining functionals does not contain a two-dimensional linear subspace, thus solving a long-standing problem of G. Godefroy. In the recent paper [J. Inst. Math. Jussieu 19, No. 1, 259--279 (2020; Zbl 1435.46006)], \textit{V. Kadets} et al. analysed deeply the process of finding ``Read norms'' on Banach spaces and provided a general method for all spaces isomorphic to a subspace of \(\ell_\infty\) that contain a copy of \(c_0\). The main aim of this fine paper is to investigate ``\(n\)-by-\(n\) versions'' of the solutions described above. It is (in Theorem 2.1) shown how to construct Banach spaces so that the set of norm-attaining functionals contains linear subspaces of dimension \(n\), but not higher. At the same time, the constructed space contains proximinal subspaces of finite codimension \(n\), but not higher. Concerning strongly proximinal subspaces, the author shows that Read's space does not contain any such hyperplane, and he shows that, for any \(1 < n <\infty\) and any \(1 \leq k < n\), there is a Banach space with a proximinal subspace of finite codimension \(n\), but not higher, and a strongly proximinal subspace of finite codimension \(k\), but not higher. In the final Section 4, the author discusses infinite-dimensional versions of the above problems. The most important result appears to be an example of a non-separable space where the set of norm-attaining functionals contains a separable linear subspace, but no non-separable linear subspace.
