The notion of \textit{Plancherel measure}, suggested by the author, is useful to treat various problems in the literature: meromorphic functions, asymptotic combinatorics, and representations of the infinite symmetric group. The main result of the paper concerns the \textit{uniqueness} of the above measure in the context of locally finite groups.
