Let \(X\) be a Banach space, let \(X'\) be its dual space, and let \(r(A)\) be the spectral radius of a bounded linear operator \(A\) on \(X\). Suppose that \(\varphi:\mathbb{R}_+\to\mathbb{R}_+\) is a nondecreasing function such that \(\varphi(t)>0\) for \(t>0\) and \(m_w(\varphi,A):=\sup_{\|x\|_X\le 1,\|x'\|_{X'}\le 1}\sum_{n=0}^\infty\varphi(|\langle A^nx,x'\rangle|)<\infty\). Let \(\Phi\) be the primitive of \(\varphi\) with \(\Phi(0)=0\), let \(\Phi^*\) be the Legendre transform of \(\Phi\), and let \(\ell^\Phi\), \(\ell^{\Phi^*}\) be the corresponding Orlicz sequence spaces. It is shown that, for \(m\) satisfying \(\max\{1,m_w(\varphi,A)\}<m<\infty\), there exists \(\beta>1\) such that \(2m(\beta-1)\|\{\beta^{-n-1}\}\|_{\ell^{\Phi^*}}<1<2m\|\{\beta^{-n-1}\}\|_{\ell^{\Phi^*}}\) and \(r(A)\le 1-(2m\|\{\beta^{-n-1}\}\|_{\ell^{\Phi^*}})^{-1}\). This theorem is used to get some results on existence of discrete evolution equations in Banach spaces.
