The results in this paper improve the lower bound of estimation of the Milnor linking number using the thickness of knots and links. The results are then generalized to other finite-type invariants such as the crossing number. It would be interesting to see how the new methods developed in this paper can improve other finite-type invariant, for example, the braid index.
