Given a Tychonoff space \(X\), let \(F(X)\) and \(A(X)\) be the free topological group and the free abelian topological group over \(X\) in the sense of \textit{A. A. Markoff jun.} [C. R. (Dokl.) Acad. Sci. URSS, n. Ser. 31, 299--301 (1941; JFM 67.0750.01)], respectively. In this paper, the authors consider two topological properties of \(F(X)\) or \(A(X)\), namely the countable tightness and \(\mathfrak{G}\)-bases. Some characterizations of the countable tightness and \(\mathfrak{G}\)-bases of \(F(X)\) and \(A(X)\) for various special classes of spaces \(X\). It is proved that the following are equivalent for a stratifiable \(k\)-space \(X\): (1)\, \(F_8(X)\) is of countable tightness; (2)\, \(F(X)\) is of countable tightness; (3)\, the space \(X\) is separable or discrete. Moreover, \(F(X)\) is a \(k\)-space with a \(\mathfrak{G}\)-base if and only if either \(X\) is discrete or \(X\) is a submetrizable \(k_\omega\)-space. And, there exists a non-sequential topological group \(G\) such that it is a \(k\)-space with a countable \(cs^*\)-character.
