Cosmic and \(\aleph_0\) topological spaces were introduced and studied by \textit{E. Michael} [J. Math. Mech. 15, 983--1002 (1966; Zbl 0148.16701)]. The authors describe here the topology of these spaces in terms of special bases defined by partially ordered sets. In the main part of the paper, they complement recent work by \textit{T. O. Banakh} et al. [J. Math. Sci., New York 155, No. 4, 475--522 (2008); translation from Sovrem. Mat. Prilozh. 48 (2007; Zbl 1332.54180)], and \textit{C. S. Barroso} et al. [Math. Z. 271, No. 3--4, 1271--1285 (2012; Zbl 1266.47074)], about weakly \(\aleph_0\)-spaces and weakly* \(\aleph_0\)-spaces in the context of locally convex spaces. Among other results, the following theorems are proved: (1) If a Fréchet space \(E\) is a weakly \(\aleph_0\)-space not containing \(\ell_1\), then its strong dual \(E'\) is trans-separable. (2) Let \(E\) be a Fréchet space not containing \(\ell_1\) such that the bounded sets of \(E'\) are metrizable (i.e., \(E\) has the so-called Heinrich's density condition). Then \(E\) is a weakly \(\aleph_0\)-space if and only if its strong dual is separable. (3) If \(E\) is metrizable or a (DF)-space such that its strong dual is separable, then \(E\) is an \(\aleph_0\)-space. (4) A completely regular Hausdorff topological space \(X\) is Polish if and only if the space \(C_c(X)\) of continuous functions on \(X\) endowed with the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets is cosmic in the weak topology.
