This paper contains what the title promises: results on locally minimal topological groups related to convergence and cardinal invariants. One of the main results shows that the weight of a compact group and the character of a locally compact group is bounded by the tightness of a (locally) essential subgroup; the latter means that only the trival closed normal subgroup (in a neighbourhood of \(1\)) interesects the given group in the point \(1\). An example consequence is that minimal abelian groups of countable tightness are metrizable. Another structural result shows that non-discrete locally essential groups of locally compact abelian groups contain a copy of the one-point compactification of the discrete space of cardinality the character of the ambient group, whose point at infinity is \(0\), and hence also a convergent sequence. Some of the results extend beyond the class of abelian groups, e.g., nilpotent groups and groups where the centre has the same character as the group itself. The paper concludes with a list of interesting questions that will stimulate further research.
