Let \(G\) be a simply-connected simple complex Lie group. Its representation ring \(\text{Rep}_{\mathbb C}(G)\) is a polynomial ring and \[\text{Rep}_{\mathbb C}(G)\simeq{\mathbb Z}[\chi_1,\cdots,\chi_r]\] where the \(\chi_j\) denotes the character of the \(j^{th}\) fundamental representation of \(G\) and \(r\) is the rank of \(G\). Given a finite-dimensional representation \(V\) of \(G\), consider \(\Lambda^kV\) the \(k^{th}\) exterior power of \(V\). The paper under review addresses the problem of finding explicit polynomial relations in \(\text{Rep}_{\mathbb C}(G)\) of the form \[0=\chi_{\Lambda^kV}-p_k(\chi_1,\cdots,\chi_r)\] in the case when \(G\) is the exceptional group \(E_8\) and \(V={\mathfrak e}_8\) is the adjoint representation.
