Suppose that a finite group \(A\) acts faithfully and coprimely on a finite group \(G\). Let \(b\) be an integer such that \(|A:\mathbf{C}_A(\chi)|\leq b\) for every irreducible complex character \(\chi\) of \(G\). Extending work of \textit{A. Moretó} [Isr. J. Math. 146, 243--251 (2005; Zbl 1096.20012)], who looked at \(A\) being a \(p\)-group and \(G\) solvable, the reviewer and the author proved in [Isr. J. Math. 199, Part B, 933--940 (2014; Zbl 1305.20006)] that if \(AG\) is solvable, then \(|A|\leq b^{49}\). (They conjecture that the true bound is probably close to \(|A|\leq b^2\).) This shows that there is a ``large'' orbit in the natural action of \(A\) on the irreducible characters of \(G\). In the paper under review, the author obtains better bounds when \(A\) is assumed to be nilpotent or abelian (and \(G\) solvable). He shows that then one can replace the 49 in the above result by 15 or 8, respectively.
