\textit{M. Auslander} and \textit{R.-O. Buchweitz} [Mem. Soc. Math. France 38, 5--37 (1989; Zbl 0697.13005)] studied maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations for certain modules. Recently, \textit{O. Hernández} et al. [Appl. Categ. Struct. 21, No. 2, 119--139 (2013; Zbl 1319.18003)] developed an analogous theory of approximations in the sense of Auslander and Buchweitz for triangulated categories. The main purpose of the paper under this review is to further investigate finite resolutions and resolution dimension. The authors investigate finite resolutions by objects and \(\mathcal{X}\)-resolution dimension of objects in extension-closed subcategory of a triangulated category \(\mathcal{X}\) such that \(\mathcal{X}\) admits a weak-cogenerator \(\mathcal{W}\) . They establish two additive functors between additive quotient categories related to \(\mathcal{X}\) and \(\mathcal{W}\) when \(\mathcal{W}\) is further \(\mathcal{X}\)-injective and they show that both two functors possess certain adjointness and that one can characterize the objects with a finite resolution by objects in \(\mathcal{X}\) having a finite resolution by objects in \(\mathcal{W}\). The authors ``construct a cellular tower with respect to \(\mathcal{X}\) and show that such a cellular tower can be used to detect the value of \(\mathcal{X}\)-resolution dimension provided that \(\mathcal{X}\) is also closed under cocones''.
