The space \(\operatorname{SPD}(n)\) is the Riemannian symmetric space of symmetric positive definite matrices over the reals. From the authors ``The main purpose of this paper is to extend the method of left Lie reduction to \(\operatorname{SPD}(n)\) and use it to study two second-order variational curves: Riemannian cubics and elastica.'' A useful literature review of the subject is provided by the authors. The authors provide the definitions and equations defining Riemannian cubics and elastica (or elastic curves). They mention several practical applications where cubics are used. The left Lie reduction technique allows one to reduce Riemannian cubics to a Lie quadratics in bi-invariant Lie groups. As mentioned above, the authors extend this approach to analyse Riemannian cubics and elastica on \(\operatorname{SPD}(n)\). The authors provide a complete description of the Riemannian cubics in the submanifold of diagonal positive definite real matrices. For an arbitrary Riemannian cubic in \(\operatorname{SPD}(n)\), the authors find the determinant and a lower bound for its trace. A closed form is given for the null Riemannian cubics in \(\operatorname{SPD}(n)\). The Riemannian cubics in \(\operatorname{SPD}(n)\) are decomposed according to their ``polar coordinatess'' (diagonal matrices and orthogonal matrices). The authors also discuss elastica in locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds.
