Persistent homology with a single parameter benefits from the fact that it has a computable complete invariant, and that several distances that one might define between 1-dimensional persistent homology modules coincide. With mutiparameter persistence, however invariants that are computable are not complete, and there are a wide variety of non-identical distances that one might define between multiparameter persistence modules. The paper focuses on a new notion of distance between 2-parameter persistence modules. Though the matching distance between 2-parameter persistence modules enjoys continuity properties, the optimal matching may change in a discontinuous way. This is remedied by the stable \textit{coherent matching distance}, which is introduced as the main topic of study in this paper. The coherent matching distance contains a monodromy effect around coinciding persistence diagram points, which is explained via a well-chosen example. The authors introduce the extended Pareto grid as one of their main tools. Many intriguing open questions remain on the relationship between the coherent matching distance and other notions of distance between multi-parameter persistence modules.
