This paper deals with linear nonautonomous differential equations \[ \dot x=A(t)x \] having an exponentially bounded coefficient operator \(A:J\to{\mathbb R}^{n\times n}\), \(J\subseteq{\mathbb R}\). Provided that it is nonuniformly hyperbolic on the half line, the authors show that it can be rewritten as a diagonal system with a perturbation which is small enough. Furthermore, it is established that the diagonal terms are contained in the nonuniform exponential dichotomy spectrum. The nontrivial proofs are based on the concepts of nonuniform almost reducibility and nonuniform contractibility, which generalize the related notions originally defined in a uniform context. These results are illustrated using two examples.
