Ulrich bundles \(\mathcal{E}\) on a polarized algebraic variety \((X,\mathcal{O}_X(1))\) of dimension \(d\) are defined by the following conditions: \(H^i(\mathcal{E}(-j))=0\) for \(i=0,\dots,d\) and \(j=1,\dots,d\). Equivalently, they are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundles such that \(H^0(\mathcal{E}(-1))=0\) and \(H^0(\mathcal{E})=\deg(X,mathcal{O}_X(1)).\mathrm{rank}(\mathcal{E})\), the maximal permitted number of global sections. \textit{D. Eisenbud} and \textit{F.-O. Schreyer} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 16, No. 3, 537--575, appendix 576--579 (2003; Zbl 1069.14019)] asked whether any polarized variety \((X,\mathcal{O}_X(1))\) supports an Ulrich bundle. The paper under review deals with Ulrich bundles on the degree six Segre fourfold \((\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2,\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2}(1,1))\). Firstly, the author uses a particularly suitable full exceptional collection of the derived category of coherent sheaves on \(\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2\) and a Beilinson-type spectral sequence to completely characterize the bigraded resolution of Ulrich bundles on \(\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2\). Secondly, he characterizes Ulrich bundles \(\mathcal{E}\) of arbitrarily rank with either \(h^1(\mathcal{E}\otimes\Omega\boxtimes\Omega)=0\), \(h^1(\mathcal{E}\otimes\Omega(-1)\boxtimes\Omega(-1))=0\) (where \(\Omega\) stands for the cotangent bundle on \(\mathbb{P}^2\)), or obtained as pull-back from \(\mathbb{P}^2\).
