The present paper is devoted to investigate the finite time blow up of the solutions to the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation \[ \begin{aligned} u_{tt}-\Delta u+u & =f(u),\ (t,x) \in\mathbb{R\times R}^{n},\\ u(0,x) & =u_{0}(x) \in H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n}),\\ u_{t}(0,x) & =u_{1}(x) \in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n}), \end{aligned}\tag{1} \] where the nonlinear term \(f(u) \) has one of the forms: \begin{align*} f(u) & =\sum_{k=1}^{l}a_{k}|u|^{p_{k}-1}u-\sum_{j=1}^{s}b_{j}|u|^{q_{j}-1}u,\\ f(u) & =a_{1}|u|^{p_{1}}+\sum_{k=2}^{l}a_{k}|u|^{p_{k}-1}u-\sum_{j=1}^{s}b_{j}|u|^{q_{j}-1}u, \end{align*} under certain conditions on the constants \(a_{k},p_{k},b_{j},q_{j}\). The case of the quadratic-cubic nonlinearity \(f(u) =u^{2}+u^{3}\) is included. The aim of the paper is to give new necessary and sufficient conditions for finite time blow up and global existence of the solutions to (1). The following is proven in Theorem 3.2: Let \(p_{l}<\frac{n+4}{n}\) and the solution \(u(t,x)\) to (1) be defined on the maximal existence time interval \([0,T_{m})\). Suppose that the energy \(E(0) >0\). Then, \(T_{m}<\infty\), if and only if there is \(b\in\lbrack0,T_{m})\) such that \[ E(0) <\frac{\sqrt{p_{1}-1}}{p_{1}+1}(u(b,\cdot),u_{t}(b,\cdot)) +\frac{p_{1} -1}{2(p_{1}+1)}\|u(b,\cdot)\|^{2}. \] On the other hand, \(T_{m}=\infty\), if and only if \[ E(0) \geq\frac{\sqrt{p_{1}-1}}{p_{1}+1}(u(t,\cdot),u_{t}(t,\cdot)) +\frac{p_{1}-1}{2(p_{1}+1)}\|u(t,\cdot)\|^{2}, \] for every \(t\in\lbrack0,T_{m})\). In this case, the estimate \[ \|u(t,\cdot) \|^{2}\leq\left(\|u_{0}\|^{2}-\frac{2(p_{1}+1)}{p_{1}-1}E(0)\right) e^{-t\sqrt{p_{1}-1}}+\frac{2(p_{1}+1)} {p_{1}-1}E(0) \] is true for all \(t\geq0\).
