The authors study a blow-up criterion for an initial boundary value problem for the three-dimensional modified compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) equations proposed by \textit{H. Brenner} [``Kinematics of volume transport'', Physica A 349, No. 1--2, 11--59 (2005; \url{doi:10.1016/j.physa.2004.10.033}); ``Navier-Stokes revisited'', ibid. 349, No. 1--2, 60--132 (2005; \url{doi:10.1016/j.physa.2004.10.034})], where, compared with the classical NSF equtions, an additional unknown ``the mass-based (Eulerian) mass velocity \(\vec{v}_m\)'' is introduced and related to the velocity \(\vec{v}\) and density \(\rho\) as: \(\vec{v} - \vec{v}_m = K\nabla (\log\rho )\) with \(K\geq 0\) being a purely phenomenological coefficient. By deriving the a priori estimates under the assumption that \(\rho\) and the temperature are a priori pointwise bounded from above, the authors establish by a contradiction argument a blow-up criterion for local strong solutions in terms of the uniform norm of \(\rho\) and the temperature only. This shows that the uniform control of the density and temperature is essential for the global existence of strong solutions.
