In this paper, the author deals with a larger class of Lie algebras which also includes the nilpotent ones, namely Lie algebras of type I. They are Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ where all the eigenvalues of the operator $ad_X$ are imaginary, for all $X \in \mathfrak{g}$. These algebras are unimodular (that is, $\mathrm{tr}(\mathrm{ad}_X) = 0$, for any $X \in \mathfrak{g}$), which is a necessary condition for the associated simply connected Lie group to admit lattices. The main goal of the paper is to study Lie algebras of such a type equipped with locally conformal symplectic structures and the existence of lattices in the associated simply connected Lie groups. Indeed, locally conformal Kähler manifolds, introduced by \textit{I. Vaisman} [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 8, 521--536 (1985; Zbl 0585.53030)], are Hermitian manifolds such that each point has a neighborhood where the metric is conformal to a Kähler metric. Starting from them and not assuming the existence of a Hermitian structure, the notion of a locally conformal symplectic manifold (which had been already considered by \textit{H.-C. Lee} [Am. J. Math. 65, 433--438 (1943; Zbl 0060.38302)]) is obtained. These last objects have a great relevance in theoretical physics, due to that they play an important role in Hamiltonian mechanics for generalizing the usual description of the phase space in terms of symplectic geometry. In this frame, the author studies Lie algebras of type I and proves that the Morse-Novikov cohomology of a Lie algebra of type I is trivial for any closed $1$-form. He focuses on locally conformal symplectic structures on these algebras and shows that for one of these algebras any locally conformal symplectic structure is of the first kind. He also exhibits lattices for some 6-dimensional Lie groups of type I admitting left invariant locally conformal symplectic structures in order to produce compact solvmanifolds equipped with an invariant locally conformal symplectic structure.
