Let \((X,\|\cdot\|)\) be a real normed space and \(C\) a bounded closed convex subset of \(X\) with 0 as an interior point. Then the Minkowski functional \(p_C\) of \(C\) is an asymmetric norm on \(X\) (i.e., a positive definite, subadditive and positively homogeneous functional). The paper is concerned with the problem of best approximation with respect to \(p_C\), where \(M\) is a nonempty subset of \(X\). Let \(d_C(x,M)=\inf\{p_C(y-x):y\in M\}\) and \(P^C_M(x)=\{y\in M:p_C(y-x)=d_C(x,M)\}.\) The set \(M\) is called \(d_C\)-proximinal if \(P_M^C(x)\ne \emptyset\) for every \(x\in M.\) The authors give in Theorem 1 four conditions equivalent to the \(d_C\)-proximinality of a closed subspace \(M\) of \(X\), similar to those given in Theorem 2.1 (pp. 94--95) by \textit{I. Singer} [Best approximation in normed linear spaces by elements of linear subspaces. Bucharest: Publishing House of the Academy of the Socialist Republic of Romania; Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag (1970; Zbl 0197.38601)]. The paper ends with an example concerning the support functionals with respect to \(p_{C^\circ}\), where \(C^\circ\) denotes the polar of the set \(C\).
