The authors address the following situation. We are given two sets \(X\) and \(Y\), and subgroups \(A\) and \(B\) of \(G^X\) and \(G^Y\), respectively. The question then is how an isomorphism \(H:A\to B\) can be induced by maps between \(X\), \(Y\) and \(G\). In the spirit of the Banach-Stone theorem they derive sufficient conditions for there to be a bijection \(h:Y\to X\) and a map \(w:Y\to G\) such that \(H(f)(y)=w(y)\bigl(f(h(y))\bigr)\) for all \(y\), that is, \(H\) is a weighted composition operator. These conditions would take too much space to list here but there is a strong parallel with the case of topological spaces and homomorphisms between the Banach spaces of bounded continuous functions. Along the way there is a development of analogues of the Čech-Stone compactification and the Hewitt realcompactification.
