The equilibrium of a two-phase elastic medium is studied. One of the main results is the existence for the sharp-interface minimization problem. Another important result is the proof of the \(\Gamma\)-convergence of the phase-field diffuse-interface energies to the sharp-interface limit in the deformed configuration. A key technical point is the discussion of the interplay of deformations and perimeters in deformed configurations. A variational model of mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian type is obtained by measuring the interface in the deformed configuration.
