A Riemannian homogeneous space \((G/H,g)\) with isometry group \(G\) is called a geodesic orbit space, if every geodesic in \((G/H,g)\) is induced from a one-parameter subgroup of \(G\). Many examples of homogeneous spaces are geodesic orbit spaces, e.g., symmetric spaces, isotropy irreducible spaces, and normal homogeneous spaces of compact Lie groups. The main result of the paper under review gives an example of a left-invariant Einstein metric on the exceptional compact Lie group \(G_2\) which is not a geodesic orbit metric. Moreover, geodesic orbit metrics on generic Aloff-Wallach spaces are classified.
