    A subset \(C\) of a normed space \(E\) is called ubd if \(\sup_{f \in M} |f(x)| <\infty\) for all \(x \in C\) implies that \(\sup_{f \in M} \|f\| < \infty\) (for \(M \subseteq E^*\)). It is observed that \(C\) is ubd if and only if span\,\(C\) is a dense and barreled subspace of \(E\). A theorem of \textit{S. A. Saxon} and \textit{A. Wilansky} [Colloq. Math. 37, 217--226 (1977; Zbl 0373.46027)] is thus established in terms of a ubd set; i.e., \(E\) admits an infinite-dimensional separable quotient if and only if \(E\) admits a dense subspace which is non-ubd.
