The main result of this paper shows that if the C*-algebra \(C^*(G)\) of a second countable and locally compact Hausdorff groupoid with Haar system is CCR, then all the orbits of the underlying groupoid \(G\) are closed -- which means that its orbit space is \(T_1\) -- and all the stabilizer (i.e., isotropy) subgroups of \(G\) are CCR as locally compact groups -- that is, their C*-algebras are CCR. The main result of the paper improves a previous result by \textit{L.~O. Clark} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 56, No.~5, 2087--2110 (2007; Zbl 1136.46039)] where the same is proved under the extra assumption that all isotropy groups are amenable. The paper provides examples of groupoids \(G\) with non-amenable stabilizers where \(C^*(G)\) is GCR but not CCR and also examples of non-amenable group bundles with CCR groupoid \(C^*\)-algebra, illustrating in this way situations for the occurrence of the more general statement of the main result.
