The notion of hom-bialgebra is a deformation of the usual notion of the bialgebra, with the associativity and coassociativity deformed by two endomorphisms. When these twisted maps are inverses to each other, then the category of modules is a tensor category, as it is proved by \textit{S. Caenepeel} and \textit{I. Goyvaerts} [Commun. Algebra 39, No. 6, 2216--2240 (2011; Zbl 1255.16032)]. The aim of this paper is to give a categorical frame for general hom-bialgebras. Firstly, hom-tensor categories are introduced and it is proved the category of modules over a hom-bialgebra is a hom-tensor category. Secondly, braided hom-tensor categories are defined, and it is proved that the category of modules over a quasitriangular hom-bialgebra and that the category of Yetter-Drinfeld module over a hom-bialgebra with bijective structure map are braided hom-tensor categories. As an application, a new proves of classical results are given: for example, Yau's result on solutions of the hom-Yang-Baxter equation on any module over a quasi-triangular hom-bialgebra, or the fact that Yetter-Drinfeld modules with bijective map over a hom-bialgebra with bijective map form a quasi-braided category.
