Let \(G\) be a discrete group. The classifying space \(\underline{\underline{E}}G\) for the family of virtually cyclic subgroup is a \(G\)-CW-complex characterized by the property that the fixed point set \(\underline{\underline{E}}G^H\) is non-empty and contractible for virtually cyclic \(H\), and empty otherwise. This paper deals with the question whether there exists a finite model for \(\underline{\underline{E}}G\). More precisely, \textit{D. Juan-Pineda} and \textit{I. J. Leary} [Contemp. Math. 407, 135--145 (2006; Zbl 1107.19001)] conjectured that there exists a finite model if and only if \(G\) is itself virtually cyclic. The authors strengthen this conjecture by considering a certain algebraic condition BVC, due to \textit{J. R. J. Groves} and \textit{J. S. Wilson} [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 45, No. 1, 89--92 (2013; Zbl 1272.20038)] which is equivalent to the existence of an \(\underline{\underline{E}}G\) with finite \(0\)-skeleton, and conjecturing that a finitely presented group \(G\) has BVC if and only if it is virtually cyclic. This conjecture is then proved for a large number of groups, organized in several classes: Firstly, for HNN extensions of free groups of finite rank, and, using this result, for one-relator groups. Secondly, for acylindrically hyperbolic groups and, using a result by \textit{A. Minasyan} and \textit{D. Osin} [Math. Ann. 362, No. 3--4, 1055--1105 (2015; Zbl 1360.20038)], for \(3\)-manifold groups. Thirdly, using the Flat Torus Theorem, for a large class of CAT(0) groups which includes all CAT(0) cube groups.
